speak easy circus
Speak Easy Circus are Jack - (Guitar/Vocals/Keys), Jon - (Sax/Keys), Chats - (Bass) and Frazer - (Drums)
Where are you based?
The East End of Glasgow
What genre would you describe yourself as?
We would describe ourselves as experimental indie/funk. Hopefully when people hear us for the first time they will think it is something that they haven’t heard before.
Who is your main inspiration?
All of the band come from very different musical backgrounds, and we try to incorporate all those different influences in our music. This ranges from indie rock like Arctic Monkeys or Arcade Fire, to jazz acts like Bob Reynolds or Snark Puppy, or funk bands such as Vulfpeck.
What is your songwriting process (which bits come first?)
In general the songs will start as a demo or idea recorded in Jack’s little flat studio. The music tends to come first with lyrics coming along more slowly as the song progresses. This then comes to the band and everyone throws in all their own influences and that is what creates the final song!
What made you want to start in music?
We were all playing from a young age and were inspired by various things: hearing the guitar solo of ‘Sweet Child o’Mine’ for the first time, seeing The Simpson’s episode about Bleedin’ Gums Murphy, wanting to play music with friends, or just a desire to hit something (Frazer’s inspiration from the drums).
What is on the horizon for you?
We recently released our new single ‘Lions Should Hunt’ which you can hear on Spotify/Apple Music etc. We have two more singles planned for this year with an EP potentially further down the line. We are also hoping to be able to play some shows but we will have to play that by ear (fingers crossed).
Who would you most like to collaborate with (alive or dead)?
There are so many wonderful artists that we would love to collaborate with, Vulfpeck, Bon Iver, Snarky Puppy…too many to name really.
What is your ultimate goal?
Sell out Madison Square Gardens! But before that… really we just want the opportunity to keep playing together and growing as a band, making music that we like and playing shows as much as possible. As long as we can do that we will see what happens.
If you could cover any song, what would it be?
‘Caravan’ - a classic and a lot of fun to play. So many versions as well so we could really do something crazy.
