Artist of the Day - Fox Violet (9 July)

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

Our Artist of the Day takes us over to Los Angeles as we say hello to Fox Violet.

Who is Fox Violet?

Fox Violet is Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Thea Martre

What genre would you describe yourself as?

Indie rock, but I write pretty abstract introspective lyrics that look at identity, loss and breakdowns

What is your main inspiration?

Honestly, all I ever want is just to connect with people. As long as that’s still possible, as long as strangers connect with the songs I see a purpose in continuing.

What is your songwriting process?

I have recently been shifting into separate camps. It used to be very much intertwined but now I usually have a melody first then I will use that to find the words.

What made you want to start in music?

I felt that I had something to express about situations that left me voiceless, it was an exercise in regaining my voice metaphorically when I had been left fighting for it, when I felt that no-one listened, or allowed me to express myself. I’m very much still on this journey. I find it extremely hard to confront conflict with people so I tend to repress a lot of conversations I wish I could have in the open. It definitely fills a void inside me in that way. I do hope that someone reads the words and finds some companionship in them, but more than that it is some form of grounding to me, to let myself know that what I have to say is meaningful to myself. That in itself is enough.

What is on the horizon for you?

I am trying to not make huge plans right now and just get back to the heart of the creative process, so I am trying to find new ways to write new ways to challenge and experiment with soundscapes.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I actually don’t feel I can answer that. In my experience songwriting for me is personal and introspective so you just can’t know that it is going to work until you sit with that person and try it. Sometimes it glides along effortlessly and you are full of laughter and joy, and other times it just doesn’t work. It doesn’t matter if that songwriter is the best in the world it is 100% about song chemistry and friendship.

What is your ultimate goal?

To feel liberated and free, and at peace with myself.

If you could cover any song, what would it be?

I sound difficult but I actually don’t like doing covers! I do love singing in my front room, and for that I would say Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead but I would never cover it.

Tea making: milk first or last?

Hahah! I drink coffee and its coffee first here.

Tell us your funniest joke!

I won’t hold you hostage to my jokes hahah! I leave that to the professionals, but I love a great standup!
