Where are you based?
I am originally from Houston, TX, but now reside in Los Angeles, CA.
What genre would you describe yourself as?
I would say that Vanilla Sugar is HorrorPop. It’s a combination of many genres that inspire me- Industrial, EDM, Pop, Shock Rock, Metal, etc.
Who is your main inspiration?
I find inspiration in a lot of life experiences when it comes to lyrical content. I think that a lot of great songs come from going through something. It’s also therapeutic to write about them.
What is your songwriting process (which bits come first?)
It usually starts with the music. Typically a synth melody. The vocals are added last! Sometimes, I free style what I am singing; occasionally full lines make the cut, sometimes it’s just a phrase that turns the track into a completely different song.
What made you want to start in music?
My dad is a drummer; I feel like I was born into it. My grandfather was a trumpet player, and my grandmother was a singer and piano player as well. My dad also sings and took piano lessons when I was super little, and I too, enrolled in piano lessons with his instructor when I was four. I played a lot of music written by classical composers for a while. When I was about 10, I started writing music of my own. I remember my first song was called “Misty Trees”. It was literally about trees I saw on my way to school in the fog. Haha!
What is on the horizon for you?
I am looking forward to touring my new album. All of the previously booked dates were cancelled because of the pandemic, and I have been itching to share my music with the world!! I’ll start tour prepping sometime in May for a July and August tour with The Birthday Massacre, and will continue shooting music videos for (ideally all) songs on the album. Once tour has been completed, it will be back to the studio for me to work on album number 2! I’m ready to stay super busy this year.
Who would you most like to collaborate with (alive or dead)?
I would love to collaborate with Grimes. I think we have similar styles and would get along well.
What is your ultimate goal?
I would love to be able to tour in packed theaters. That would be so much fun.
If you could cover any song, what would it be?
I would love to cover Kill V. Maim by Grimes. I should do it!! That song is so fun to listen to; I can only imagine how fun it would be to perform!
Tea making: milk first or last?
Almond Milk last for sure!!
