Today we take a trip to Budapest, Hungary to meet Fanni Mayer, our Artist of the Day
What genre would you describe yourself as?
Feminine power-pop
Who would you say is your main inspiration?
There are too many I guess. I grew up listening to those effortlessly divine divas like Whitney Houston, Nina Simone, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand. Big feminine energy. I'm a true 90's kid. I was inspired by late 90's and early 2000's R'n'B, soul and pop music like Destiny's Child, The Fugees, TLC, Nelly Furtado, No Doubt etc.
And I was a HUGE Spice Girls fan to be honest. My favorite was Sporty Spice. I put my fake tattoos on, crop top and everything and sang around the house like crazy.
Our neighbours loved me so much...(laughs) Pink's M!ssundaztood and Christina Augilera's Stripped albums had a big impact on me. I remember the first time I heard 'Family Portrait', 'Just like a pill', 'I'm OK', 'Fighter' and 'Can't Hold Us Down' I was mesmerized. The way they talked about equality, toxic relationships and domestic violence. Those were taboo topics back then in pop music and it's like a breath of fresh air. I felt less alone, empowered and I thought one day I'll be a storyteller singer too...
Also I was heavily inspired by Leonard Cohen's poetry and the way he delivered, so pure, honest and complex. Fiona Apple, Amy Winehouse, Tracy Chapman, Lykke Li, Florence Welch , Lorde, St. Vincent and Sting influenced me very much.
What is your songwriting process?
I usually start with a feeling, a word, an expression then I try to unfold it. I sit down with my guitar or a (much) better guitar player or a pianist and we improvise around till we find the vibe and mood that captures the feeling. And I go to the studio with the right producer (right for the song) and we work together to find the best instrumentation for the song. That was my process with my upcoming EP's songs but I'm always open for new methods and ways.
What made you want to start in music? I wanted to be an actress but I found out through music and singing I can express my emotions and feelings so much more and I fell in love with making music the first time I went into the studio and the first time I've played with a band. It's magic. What is on the horizon for you?
World Domination for sure. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Leonard Cohen! What is your ultimate goal? My ultimate goal is to make people feel less alone, connected and make them embrace their feelings, flaws and mistakes in this often unkind world.Help them heal emotionally, make them feel free and empowered. That's what music gave to me and I wanna give it back! If you could cover any song, what would it be?
Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, Lose Yourself by Eminem, Mad World by Gary Jules.
Tea making: milk first or last?
Last always. Tell us your funniest joke!
Ah I can't, I don't even know jokes. I'm a very serious person. (she joked)
