Blue River and Sugar White Sand

Updated: Sep 28, 2019

Blue River are an energetic and punchy 4-piece indie surf punk band from Cornwall, consisting of members Perran Nicholls (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Marc Willoughby (lead guitar/vocals), Adam Knuckey (bass guitar/vocals), and Brett Buddy (drums/percussion).

After bursting onto the scene, the band have already released two albums and have certainly won their place amongst some of the most exciting up and coming groups around. Their summer release ‘Lucy’ was a rock triumph and they’ve just released their next weapon, an undeniably catchy indie anthem that Huw Stephens (BBC R1) has already dubbed “powerful stuff.”

‘Sugar White Sand’ landed today and what a banger it is! The indie surf shines through and you can’t help but tap your feet and dig out the old air guitar. Its full of rousing guitars and an amazingly catchy chorus that you can’t help singing along to. The whole song oozes class, from the clever lyrics to the almost taunting, feisty vocal style which will leave the object of attention of the song in absolutely no doubt who it’s about.

“Sugar White Sand’ came from a bad night’s party, where one person became everything I hate and was the loudest person in the room! So, I started a chant with a group of lads, the famous ‘Oggi oggi oggi’ chant (being from Cornwall everyone instantly joined in) - it seemed to shut this person up for a bit. Then I wrote this tune! “I don’t wanna be like you” is a powerful line I think. As well as Cornwall vernacular, ‘Oggi Oggi Oggi’ is also a very well-known Welsh chant, used at international rugby matches to rouse the Welsh team forward and popularised by folk singer Max Boyce.”

It’s easy to hear how the guys are building themselves a real platform for success. They have become festival regulars, appearing at Boardmasters, Leopallooza, Tunes in the Dunes and The Little Orchard and they are touring across the south of England in the coming months.
