Hybrid Spirits are Nigel Rooke – Vocals, lyrics, keyboards and drum programming, Paul Kirk – Vocals, lyrics, keyboards, guitars and drum programming and Voodoo Jade – Vocals and lyrics

Where are you based?

We are all from the West Midlands area of the UK, with Nigel and Voodoo Jade living in Birmingham. Paul relocated to Pontefract, West Yorkshire several years ago.

What genre would you describe yourself as?

Alternative ?!

We can’t describe our style as everything which we work on is different from the last song.  To date, our music has ranged from ambient to alternative, from industrial and electronic to rock.

Who is your main inspiration?

We all have different music tastes and influences. For Nigel it would be Gary Numan, for Paul it would be Pink Floyd, for Voodoo Jade it would be Evanescence.

What is your songwriting process (which bits come first?)

It varies, and depends who has started writing the song. Sometimes the lyrics are written before the music is started, and then music is created around the lyrics. Other times, an instrumental track is created to which lyrics and vocals get added afterwards.   It can also depend on who is writing the music or lyrics as Nigel can write music and lyrics from scratch at the same time, whereas Voodoo Jade will write lyrics based on the instrumental version of a song.  Nigel can often write lyrics which have an emotional link, whereas Voodoo Jade will work with feelings and images which a piece of music creates for her.  Sometimes, it can just start with a good guitar riff or a synth sounds, and the song will be developed from there. Each song gets sent to each band member for them to add something to it.

What made you want to start in music?

We’ve all been interested in music for many years. Paul was 17 when he got his first guitar, and Nigel got his first synth at the age of 16. Voodoo Jade started learning cello, guitar and piano when she was 8, and was in award winning school choirs. Hybrid Spirits formed in 2017 after Paul Kirk met Voodoo Jade via a collaborative project.  Before that, Paul and Nigel were in a band for many years called “Aus der Asche” which became known as “From the Ashes UK”. After the collaborative project, Paul and Nigel invited Voodoo Jade to join them in their music venture, and Hybrid Spirits were born!

What is on the horizon for you?

We have already started recording some new songs which will be on a future release. Again, it is a different feel to the music which we’ve already released, and could be classed as darkwave/ electronic (plus guitars!). We are still writing more music for the next EP/album so everything could change yet! We do alternate vocals between Nigel and Voodoo Jade, and the next EP will predominately be Nigel on main vocals. His voice is perfect for darker songs!

Paul is focussing on writing a few more songs in the style of “Fear” as it has proved so popular and people really like it.

The band is also recording relaxation music for a series of meditation tracks which Voodoo Jade is currently working on. There are some tracks for general meditations, and some for the development of psychic awareness/abilities.

And finally….we’re still fundraising until the end of April 2021 for our charity single “Rain or Shine” .  It is a song which we wrote during lockdown in England to reflect feelings of hope and solidarity during the Covid-19 pandemic, and sales from it are raising money for the International Committee of the Red Cross for those affected by Covid-19 across the world.  You can see their appeal at : https://www.icrc.org/en/donate/covid-19-emergency-appeal

It’s not too late to buy a copy of the charity single (£1.50 or more) to support the cause at our Bandcamp page : www.hybridspirits.bandcamp.com and we send our heartfelt thanks to everybody who has supported both the song and the cause.  Many thanks to everyone!

Who would you most like to collaborate with (alive or dead)?

For Paul it would be Rammstein, for Nigel it would be Gary Numan, for Voodoo Jade it would be Indigo Girls.

What is your ultimate goal?

To get signed and play lots of festivals!

If you could cover any song, what would it be?

We’d love to cover “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd as it is such a brilliant song. We did try to recreate it but didn’t come close. There’s a reason why it was voted one of the best guitar solos ever!

Tea making: milk first or last?

Last, definitely!

Tell us your funniest joke!

Q. Why did the pianist keep banging his head against the keys?
A. He was playing by ear!
