Bournemouth's Sentinel Complex are Jamie Everett (guitars, vocals, orchestration, mixing, programming/synths) and Joshua Grayson (vocals, programming/synths). They tell us that their genre is difficult to tie down but can be best described as industrial metal with an orchestral/ electronic twist.

Who is your main inspiration?

We’ve got two main inspirations really – cyberpunk and horror! By far those are our biggest influences for our music overall, but if we are talking artists it would be guys like Fear Factory, Nine Inch Nails, Swarm and Mechina.

What is your songwriting process (which bits come first?)

Usually it’s always either a melody or a chord sequence that comes first, that’s how about 90% of our songs start anyway! We do the writing 50/50, but the starting idea we feel is the most important part, so if the starting idea makes both of us happy, we’ll develop it. At some point Jamie will then sit down with it and take it as far as it will go, with Josh giving input where needed, and eventually we have a finished track which we are both happy with!

What made you want to start in music?

Jamie: I grew up in a family of musical people and have just always been around it, so I was sure to get into music at some point! It was when I watched a friend of mine play his guitar when I was about 8 that really got me wanting to do music myself though, and since then it has just been a big part of my life. When I started actually studying music though, I found myself deep in the rabbit hole of recording, mixing and learning to play other instruments. Without music though I would have no idea what I would be doing. Before I started doing music more seriously I wanted to be an engineer, so it’s probably something along those lines!

Josh: My earliest memory of music in my life would have to be sitting in my nan’s living room in oxford with my uncle. He had MTV2 on when Marilyn Manson’s video for Dope Show came on and I was transfixed by the sounds and imagery. I have always seen myself as an artistic type, always playing around with media. I looked up to people like Clown (from Slipknot) and Manson, and due to following artists like them for years, music became to me like painting time with sound.

What is on the horizon for you?

Well we will be steadily releasing multiple singles throughout the year and into next year and once we have enough out, we will be collating them and a few other unreleased songs onto a full album in 2021 if all goes to plan! We will always be posting updates on our socials, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Oh there is many haha, to name a few would be people like Trent Reznor, Mick Gordon, Hans Zimmer, Spencer Sotelo from Periphery

What is your ultimate goal?

Honestly it’s hard to pin down an ultimate goal for us, we just make music because we love it. The fact that there are people out there that enjoy our music too and look forward to our releases just makes it so much sweeter. I guess you could say we just want to inspire, really encourage others to push boundaries musically and if we manage to give that sense of “holy shit that’s awesome, I want to do that”, then it’s all worth it just for that.

If you could cover any song, what would it be?

We’ve covered two of our favourite pieces ever which were the scores to Blade Runner and Stranger things! If we were to cover something else we would probably have to say either a horror movie theme like Halloween or The Fog, or something themed around the Titanfall universe.

Tea making: milk first or last?

Milk last in tea, unless you’re wrong. Milk before water in coffee though... that’s the way forward.

Tell us your funniest joke!

So since vampires are hurt by holy water, we always wondered why priests don’t just bless storm clouds and kill them all from above. Then we realised why most vampires live in Europe - because someone already blessed the rains down in Africa.

Now THAT'S funny!
